I installed j2re (the java runtime environment) and everything installed fine. When i open firefox and go to the test page it says that java still needs to be installed. Are there additional steps that need to be taken?

I'm not sure that the JRE actually installs the java virtual machine ( or whatever they call the "browser" plugin). I would try going to mozilla's plugin site, and looking around there for an installer.
