After months of speculation following James Toney making his intentions to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship public, one of the greatest boxers of our time is now set to embark on his career in mixed martial arts. FiveOuncesofPain.com has been informed through sources close to the situation that James Toney has recently been signed to a multi-fight contract with the UFC.
Toney was seen during UFC 108 while attempting to track down UFC President Dana White in hopes of negotiating terms for the boxer to enter the UFC, although more recent comments from Toney made it appear as though the deal, if any, was dead in the water before today.
“Lights Out” is a former professional middleweight, super-middleweight, and cruiserweight boxing champion, while currently being listed as the active NABO and IBA heavyweight title holder.
Toney’s decorated professional boxing record currently stands at 72 victories and only 6 defeats, with 3 draws and 2 no-contests. James has stopped 44 of his 72 victims via knockout for an impressive 61% knockout ratio.
There is no news currently available as to when Toney will be making his debut for the promotion. Stay tuned to 5 Oz. as we keep you up to date on this developing story.

He thinks it's a good signing because it's the only big name in the HW division that Cro Cop can beat.

This will pave the way for younger/better boxers to make the jump to MMA - while in their prime.

Besides, after the rash of injuries that the UFC has had to deal with in recent months, I can't imagine how a big name signing can be a bad thing.

    No it won't.

Younger better boxers make far more money boxing. This is paving the way for washed up boxers with zero relevance left to try their hand at mma.

Boxing's Heavyweight division is atrocious at best, which just goes to show you have far off the boxing map Toney has fallen.

Yes and no. I'm not talking about the Andre Bertos of the world here.

I also think salaries in MMA are going to rise sharply in the coming years, but that's a whole 'nother discussion.

Who wouldn't want to see this guy fight Kimbo Slice?

Of course he'll never be a champion, but it is still interesting to see. Out of all of the MMA fighters, this guy probably has the best boxing credentials. I'm excited.

i'm pretty intrigued by this. if toney can get in shape and learn some takedown defense and ground defense, he could be exciting. i think at least once he'll light some fool up :noes:

Berto makes really good money in boxing. His brother couldn't cut it in boxing thats why he is in mma and making chump change.

    Try again.

If Toney could get himself in shape he would be fighting in relevant heavyweight boxing matches. He is going to come in real fat and real out of shape.

No, their not. Unless MMA goes the route of boxing and has one "big" fight on a card and not a huge, full, exciting undercard - it won't happen.

That's not to say that the $2-$3 million that the UFC pays it's roster for a show compares to the $40 million the boxing headliners get. But with full, stacked cards the salaries aren't going to raise to anything near other pro sports level..

Making $40k is a nice payday by MMA standards but Floyd Mayweather and Alex Rodriguez make $40k for taking a shit.
