Maybe his original gun was a beretta, I don't know. I've never seen any bond movies. But I do know the gun he is famous for is the Walther PPK.

He originally had the Beretta .25ACP with a suppressor. After having trouble with it in From Russia With Love, in Dr. No he then moved up to the "man-stopping" 7.65mm Walther PPK and a S&W Airweight Centennial .38

The 7.65mm was chosen for its broad availability, especially in Europe and the .38 was for extra oomph.

you might be correct about the calibers, however, as someone else already mentioned: Dr. No was the first james bond.

i googled and found the site you got your info from, kellyclan. it seems, though, that is the only site mentioning "from russia with love" as the reason for bond having to change guns.

on some other fan sites it basically just said that james bond used the PPK from dr. no up to tomorrow never dies in 1997, when he replaces it with a P99.

Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, Diamonds are Forever, and From Russia with Love all came before Dr. No in the books. :dunno:

And if you're referring to the movies.. On her Majesty's Secret Service was the first movie. I forgot who played Bond, but that was his one and only Bond film. Sean Connery took over for the next.

in goldeneye for n64 the gun is called pp7.

he switches the gun in the one with the azn chick while they are researching shit (the only thing i remember about the scene is him saying how he's a fan of chinese technology after using the fan thing) and he mentions he has been using and liked the p99 lately.
