Kicking around the idea of maybe possible getting a Jaguar S-type preowned. The ones I am looking at are low mileage from around 2000-01. Most of them have 40-60k miles on it.
How are the long term reliablity of these. I am not sure what year Ford took over, but do they have problems. I figure most of them were driven new by adults and probably not hotrodded/abused. I can find many of them inexpensive for around the 15-20k range that would work.

Also an extended warrenty is available..

I am also considering other cars in the ~18k range.. any other suggestions

My friend got a brand new 04 X-Type 2 months ago for 22grand out the door. See if Jaguar has any deals like that near you for brand new S-Types.

dunno how relevant this is to you, but trade in value on jags (of any year) is crap. Dealers don't want them because they don't make sense to have on their lots.

It will be something to drive for a few years.. I drive 6-7k a year and at that point it donest even make sense to lease anymore. 5 years I would have only probably under 40k miles. So lower mileage used car. I have loved the S-types since I have seen them.
I am also considering a A4/A6 Audi.. size will be a determining factor since I will have a car seat in the back.

Overall quality has been just above the rangerover, which is to say not very good. So in general terms you're more likely to have problems. However, you get a lot of style for your money because they deprecaite so quickly. If you get a good, long extended warentee you'll be fine. Enjoy.

    Which models and which trannys.

Any reason why they depreciate so quickly? They sell for in the 40's new and now in the teens a few years old?

Jags haven't been able to hold their value for years.

I use the term "value" loosely for the X-Type. That car is a real piece.

Jag has moved up quite a bit in the JD Power & Associates rankings. This is not to say that they aren't without their problems, but they are a lot better then previous years. Drive one if you haven't driven one before. That will most likely be your deciding factor.
