I helped my friend build and fine tune a Jacob's Ladder (to be used at this up coming Halloween party). This is off topic to this group, but I'm not ready to have a swarm of OTers test my bandwidth.

Its 12,000 volts provided by a used neon transformer. The video is WMV, 2 minutes, 1.5mb, and in the middle of it you'll find me (I'm the guy standing). The extra copper you see was to be trimmed. The setup we had was a prototype to see if it would even work.

    When on: yes

It puts out 12,000 volts at 30milli-amps (the black wire you see on the ground is plugged directly into 120v AC). The amperage is really low, but still enough to make for a bad evening or worse, stop the heart (if one used both hands to grab each wire).

I learned a few things in high school physics. One was: when playing with electricity, put one hand behind your back. You may still electricute yourself, but you will have less risk of electricity passing from one arm to the other and stopping your heart.

Heck yeah! It looks and sounds awesome!

In theory, my friend is building an enclosure for it. I'm not sure if it will be done in time, but we'll see. If not, I'm sure we could put it on a shelf somewhere where its out of reach.

Oh yeah, if the voltage doesn't kill you, Jacob's Ladders do produce a good chunk of ozone and UV light.
