...in the last month and a half, while making significant gains in muscle mass and strength. I went from 195 to 182 this morning. The next month is probably going to go more slowly, but hopefully within 2-3 months I'll have a flat stomach for the first time in my life.

    thanks F&N

I doubt you have made any gains in mass.

every morning, i have a protein shake with a bunch of stuff in it. I make sure to eat every 3 hours, and I stay away from sugars and only eat complex carbs. In general, however, I try to stay away from carbs and eat mostly protein, fiber, and clean fats

gain in muscle mass=gain in weight...I second that you probably did not gain muscle mass. You may be referring to getting more cut? It may seem like you are gaining muscle, but you are only revealing the muscle underneath all that fat.

i'm 5'9''. I lift heavy 4-5x a week, do 30 min of cardio after lifting, and do 45 minutes of cardio on off days.

I've definantly made gains in strength and muscle mass; I hadn't been on a lifting program before.

Not to be a jackass but this is why you are gaining strength, not because of an increase in muscle mass. In the beginning the majority of your gains is your body learning to use its current muscle to its full potential. It seems that you are gaining muscle because you are cutting the fat from the top of it giving you more definition.
