I've been jonesing for a DSLR for a while. I have a Canon 30D at work I can play with but we only have the kit lens.

I really don't know why I want a DSLR right now because I don't plan on shooting anything nor do I plan on trying to earn some money with it. However, when I retire from the video production bidness in a few years, I wouldn't mind turning pro photographer again. I guess I want one now so I can play with it, shoot some car pics, etc. I have my old SLR Minolta with four lenses but I don't want to shoot film...I want to really learn digital photography.

I want to buy a Canon but the problem is I don't know if a 40D or 30D is "pro" enough for professional work. I think I'd need a full frame DSLR like the Mark1D but that's too much $$$$ for me to spend now.

    What do I do OT???

What do you need full frame for? I can post some of my high rez images out of my D300 if you like.

plenty of pro's use the 20/30/40D. and the 1D isn't full frame. the 1Dsmk-- is though, but it's stupid expensive. If you don't need the insane FPS rate, why bother with the 1d series... jut grab a 5D if you want full frame and be happy.

I only posted the nikon images to give example of file sizes. I know you want a canon.

Ask one of the canon guys to post.

I think you're right that it's a scam but if you want to follow up for me and it turns out to be the real deal, I'll buy it in a heartbeat! I've got cash in hand!!

It's a scam. They had a 40D for 450 in DFW when I started looking for a camera.

    Prices on the 5D is dropping; I'd opt for a 5D over a 40D.

I'd go with a 5d. Even Ken Rockwell (biggest nikon sackrider in the world) agrees that it's just a better quality sensor.

For most standard work you're right. However, there will be the odd job where size matters. That's why I would rather bite the bullet and spend the money on a full frame camera. I spent too many years shooting with a 35mm camera only to wish I had a medium format camera for critical jobs.

If I could afford both I would. I have to start to make some money with the camera first (which is the ultimate goal) then maybe I'll get another body at a later date.
