I kind of want to get something that will give me a very shallow dof.

What kind of lens should I be looking for?

I've never looked into glass as the 18-105 did most of what I needed. So excuse my stupid question.

I was thinking 50mm 1.8 or maybe 1.4 if I feel extra ballin.

depends what focal length you want. the longer the focal length the better DOF you will likely get.

    35mm f/1.8 AF-S - $200 new
    50mm f/1.4 AF-S - like $450 new
    50mm f/1.4 AF-D - like $230 used
    50mm f/1.8 AF-D - like $130 new or $100 used
    85mm f/1.8 - like $350 used
    85mm f/1.4 - like $900 used (best choice)

Alright, old thread, but I need to buy another lens.

I actually picked up the the 50mm f/1.4 AF

Going to be picking up a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8

So I'll have a Telephoto, prime, and a wide angle.

What else would I need ? What applications would the 200mm+ range be good for?
