    ok so heres the deal.

    i bought a 15" mbp (the $1999 version, no upgrades) on 8/14/09.

my itunes has all my ripped CDs in apple lossless format.

iTunes works fine, except when i try to close it. i can close it normally via menu --> exit or whatever, even apple+Q, force quit etc...it closes, but the immediately bounces back and minimizes itself. ( i cant shut down unless i hold the power button until it shuts off)

the only thing i did that i noticed was i installed last.fm plugin for itunes..it started not shutting down..so i removed the plugin...didnt change, so i used appzapper to uninstall itunes, then reinstalled it.

    no change.

    any ideas?

well i don't see how it could be hardware related, so i'd think it has to be software.
for that, you do a clean install.

Just grab your music and move it out of the Itunes folder and reinstall Itunes.

Look to see if there is anything in the

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents
    or /Library/LaunchAgents

directories having to do with iTunes or that plugin you installed. If there is, move it out of that directory and see if that fixes your problem.

i had previously had last.fm plugin installed.

problem happened. i dragged itunes to appcleaner, and it deleted everything.. reinstalled itunes, was fine for awhile.

upgraded to SL seamlessy, and everything worked fine.

last night problem happened again. :wtc:

ill check launchagents for any plugins and move em to see if it works.

    I will report back tonight.

I think he already tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

There's something going on in the system files that isn't a normal part of the iTunes installation that is causing this behavior.

the only way for me to "quit itunes" is for me to hold the power button until it shuts off.

So did my earlier advice to look into those directories help at all? If not, we need to do some further debugging here.

there were no entries for itunes in launchagents.

i wound up just uninstalling itunes and reinstalling..that seemed to work (again)...for now.

when you uninstall/reinstall make sure you remove all associated files and plists so when you reinstall you get a fresh set of plists and files. there's a possibility the files associated w/ itunes could be corrupt and even though you uninstall/reinstall itunes, those corrupt files (possibility) are still being used by itunes, hence the issue reocurring

that article will walk you through how to fully remove all associated files with itunes, if you're able to uninstall you should be able to do all the necessessary steps in that article

Also, setup a new user account on the computer and install itunes. LMK what the outcome is to be able to narrow it down and see if its user specific or system wide

I'm a little drunk and dont want to read the whole thread again, but have you talked with apple directly about this? Or taken the computer to a store to have them look at it?

no, kinda wanted to avoid wasting my time doing that.

its gotta be a software issue, since i dont know of others having the same problem.

this weekend im going to do an erase and install of SL...hopefully that will help..

Copy and paste this into the Terminal and post the results:

    ps -p `ps -ef | grep iTunes | grep -v grep | perl -e '$_ = <>; split /\s+/; print $_[3]'`

    edit:

AFTER you've force quitted it and it restarted on its own.

Have you read any of the logs in Console for what is calling the program to open back up? It should mention it, especially after a Forced Quit operation.

But the thing is under warranty and you paid a good chunk of change for it...why NOT take it in and have them look at it? You're going to spend more time futzing with it when you could probably take a trip into the city, get it done, and go on with your life. :dunno:
