I had about .8gb free on my hard drive so I bought an external HD. The vast majority of my HD was taken up by music, so I'm trying to figure out a new way of organizing it. Is there a way to have my iTunes set up so that it reads files from my external HD, not from the computer's? Like so I can just delete all my music files from my computer after copying them to the external HD and iTunes won't need to relocate the file for every single song I play? In addition to that, is there a way to set up my iTunes so that whenever I download music or copy music into iTunes it automatically puts it on the external HD?

move all your music to your external drive
go to your preferences in itunes
    click on Advanced
change the "Music Folder Location" to where ever it is on your external drive.

for the copy music to your external drive automatically, click the 2 checkboxes in the same preference tab

Now there's another issue...whenever I want to play a song now, I have to go through the process of selecting the external HD as my music location to tell iTunes where the file is located. Is there a way to just have iTunes know that all the music in my library is now on my external HD?

When I transfered my music over to an external I ended up having to edit the library file. Wasn't too bad using textwrangler Just changed did a find all of the old location and replaced all new location.

You would lose play count, rating, etc if you do that though.

Well for some who have playlists built off that data it will hurt to lose it so just find it better to always keep it.

    Just my opinion.

thats a price he'll have to pay for moving the library. itunes has it set with the music in one place and now hes got to move it to another. everything will be off if he doesnt readd the songs

meh, having to change the typed location of thousands of songs is a pita. i'd rather make a list of the songs on a playlist then add them later

Changing the location for one song or millions would require the same amount of work.

    shortest way to do it

No I was saying editing the library file location for one song or a million songs would be the same amount of work.

Again you lost all your ratings, play count, skips, etc. My playlist rely on this info and that isn't an option.
