So, my gun store has Mosin Nagants for sale. I've always wanted one (and by always, I mean ever since I saw on in Metal Gear 3)
Buuuuut, I was under the impression that ammo is limited for them. So I sort of set my sights on the Remington 700
I think it's important for any shooting enthusiast to be comfortable (if not well versed) in the art of long rage shooting. I also think bolt action rifles are neat! As such, I will be getting one of the aforementioned rifles.

which ones would you get, and why?

    M. Nagant is cheaper ($200 vs $700), but ammo costs twice as much (from a quick google search. Though I'm sure I could shop around for a fair price for both)
Some models of the Remington 700 come with scopes all ready on them. This is nice, because I do not know what all is involved in attaching, and then calibrating scopes

so, yah. that's all I know off the top of my head. There was a Rem 700 article a few days ago that I remember reading, but iirc, it turned into a gun pron topic

    what about long term value?
    ease of cleaning/ maintenance?
best for keeping around in case shtf?

so yah, in your opinion- nagant, or 700?

If you're 21 or over, apply for your C&R license and you can have them shipped directly to your house. It's $30 for the license.

That's one gunstore I'd never be stepping foot in again.

You can get a 91/30 Mosin for 70 dollars and ammo is roughly ~100$/400 rounds.

x54 ammo has been plentiful for the last several years.

All of that ammo is great, don't be afraid of corrosive ammo. Cleaning the Mosins is a snap. Drop the bolt out and run a little Windex down the barrel, sop the Windex out with a rag then do the standard patch cleaning and you're done.

    Theres the 91/30s

You can use hot water if you want. It doesn't have to be windex. You just need something that will evaporate quickly. I've tried windex and I've wound up with rust in my bore...so I just use hot soapy water, and then oil it when I get home.

Boiling water for the win. Just give the metal parts time to cool down before you touch them.

I use brake cleaner when I don't have any other solvents around. Works great on gunk but I don't know if it does the same as the Windex/hot water for the corrosive salts.

It works in the same way, as long as you use enough. You just have to be a little more careful with plastics and woods when you use brake cleaner.

Any scope would be fine (excluding rimfire scopes obviously) but mounting can be tricky IIRC (I don't have one.) But I think it involves tapping the receiver and using a down-turned bolt. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Windex alone does not work for me. I use hot soapy water, followed up by CLP. No problems so far using this method.

Yep, you're right. I think ATI makes a kit for them.

A cheap Mosin is not at all in the same universe as a 700, and I'm not saying that to be a dick.

+1, i just couldn't come up with a polite way to say it. A MN is just a toy to fuck around with, not a way to practice accurate shooting with to me.

So I think we've come to the conclusion that the correct answer is:

    "get both"

Unless you're buying private party from a guy who put it together, any factory package you find for a 700 with a scope is probably crap. Better to look at the 700 SPS or 700P and build it up from there. You will want Badger sight base and rings, buy these off the bat and you won't need to replace them.

Pretty sure it was the slushy mix of snow, mud, and Russian intestines that did that. :o

yah, slash and burn retreat ft... w?

it's the same reason america can't invade canada. they'd retreat into the wilderness with which they are more familiar. although, with technology now a days, we could probably get the logistics taken care of to keep the front lines supplied.
which probably means small contingents of canadian guerrillas would stay behind and disrupt the supply lines.

    Yeah, and that's the problem.

Time has slightly moved on in the last 60 years or so.
