If GM would've changed the Oldsmobile brand name to say...Aurora, named after its flagship model...maybe Oldsmobile products would've survived today. With the exception of the minivans, I really liked Oldsmobile products. :(

Buick, Pontiac, and Saturn =

    I had a 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible.

It was the best vehicle I've ever owned.

I had to sell it to pay for college. :wtc:

I liked the current Olds models a lot more than the ones of the last several years. The Aurora was really sharp, so was the Alero. If they moved those cars over to Buick I could understand, but just dropping them doesn't make sense. Screwed some long term loyal dealerships too.

missmanagement... and shitty cars. My mom used to have a 94 regal, and it threw a rod after only 60k miles :ugh: The engine bay was designed horibbly too, if you wanted to change your oil pan you had to lift the entire engine :ugh:

GM is the prime example of why the "Brand Management" method of running a company where technology matters - doesn't work.

Brand management is fine for companies that make appliances and other commodities. But where the end product actually relies on technological advances, it just doesn't work.

What you end up with is an underfunded development team who's technology (or lack thereof) gets spread over a huge number of differently branded products (3800 anyone? or how about the G platform?)...and a lot of marketing types who think the brand/advirtising and "product positioning" are the only things that matter....

Bottom line, when engineering matters - brand management doesnt work.

I laugh at the people out there who spend $60k for an escalade with the same platform/drivetrain as a suburban.

I'm sorry, but the 3800 V6 is actually an excellent engine.

GM shafted Olds with the development of the Shortstar V6. It was supposed to be a corporate engine, but GM sent all the development to Olds, who had nowhere near the resources in the mid/late 90's to develop this engine. No money for product development+no marketing budget = lose.

Lack of marketing (no brand awareness), lack of direction (who, and what is Oldsmobile now?), is what is universally agreed upon in the biz as taking Oldsmobile to the point where GM lost more money on each Olds vehicle sold that it ended up being cheaper to kill the brand name.

Chrysler was set up in such a way that killing their brands (Eagle, Plymouth) was cheap and easy, but that isn't the case and GM and Ford. It's cheapier and healthier for the company to keep their brands going.

Ford is having a similar problem with Mercury right now that GM had with Oldsmobile money wise.

GM Powertrain creates all the engines, not the division.

GM's divisions exist basically in name and marketing only. :slap:
