ive noticed a couple people on here have the sigma 17-70 f/2.8-whatever. ive tryed my buddys 17-70 and i liked it, but its a bit heavy. im pretty set on getting one, my question is for the price ~400, is there a lens i should be considering instead of this one?

i was thinking about the new canon 18-55 IS kit lens because its so cheap, and getting one of those russian manual fisheye lenses shortly down the road. but i think im pretty set on the sigma 17-70.

    thanks

I like mine a lot I'll probably sell it eventually and upgrade to the 24-70L though :o I would also look at the tamron 17-50 f2.8 or sigma 18-50 f2.8 constant 2.8 is nice...I've used the 17-85 IS it was ok the sigma seems sharper though

My roommate had one and loved it. It wasn't that heavy in relationship to my 24-70 L thought. Nice sharp lens, and it had a very very short focusing distance. The front element could almost be touching whatever u were taking a picture of.

I just hated that it didn't have a constant aperture.

i ended up getting the sigma 18-50 f/2.8... the guy at the shot said if i used it but it was still resellable that i could return it. so im going to play with it next to the 17-70 and see which i like better.

so far its a pretty neat lens, quite a step up from the kit.
