Police fearful of violent crime trend: AK-47 shootings
    By Leon Fooksman

Police are growing alarmed over a new twist in violent crimes: AK-47s.

In the past two weeks, assault rifles were used in at least six incidents in Palm Beach and Martin counties that left two people dead and five injured, including a sheriff's deputy who was shot in the arm on Thursday while making a routine traffic stop, police said. Shells have riddled a police cruiser and the home of a former sheriff's captain.

"The criminal element is very well armed and they have no regard for innocent bystanders," said Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jack Strenges, the violent-crimes division commander.

Police are particularly at risk from the weapons because of their high firepower and ability to penetrate body armor, experts said. Drug traffickers, gang members and other career criminals have long preferred the guns, which almost anyone without a major crime conviction can purchase for as little as $350 at gun shops, they said.

Investigators suspect two of the recent shootings may be related and they are seeing if more are connected. Detectives recovered three AK-47 rifles in Martin County and so far have linked one of them to the shootings. Officials believe specific people have been targeted, but warn that innocent bystanders easily can be cut down when gunfire rings out.

High-powered guns have been on the streets in the area for years, but seldom have police seen so many attacks in such a short period of time, detectives in both counties said.

"There is a lot of concern from law enforcement officers," said West Palm Beach Capt. Laurie Van Deusen, criminal-investigations division commander.

According to police, the guns were used in:

The April 27 shooting of David Paulk, 24, and his 16-year-old sister in West Palm Beach. Paulk later died. Police arrested Brandon Williams, 23, for the shootings.

The April 28 shooting of Alejandro Camacho, 32, in the 1300 block of Suwanee Drive west of West Palm Beach. Hours later, someone shot into a house near the intersection of Mercer Avenue and Alpha Street in West Palm Beach. No one has been arrested in the shootings. Authorities think the two are connected.

The April 30 shooting in the parking lot of Toxido's nightclub west of Lake Worth. Deputies found Stevie McKinnon Jr., 24, of Miami, shot dead near the club and Johnny Lebrun, 20, of Miami shot in the neck. The club's security guard, Nadine Holmes, 37, of Miami, was hit in the leg. No one has been arrested. Investigators said they found AK-47 shells in the parking lot, but don't know if the victims were shot by that rifle model.

The May 2 shooting into the Hobe Sound home of former Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Capt. Ed Gray. No one has been arrested.

Thursday's shooting of Martin County Sheriff's Deputy Dale Howard, 49, in Port Salerno. He was hit in the left arm and is recovering at St. Mary's Medical Center. Police arrested Durell Sims, 23, after he admitting firing 13 shots at the deputy, Martin County Sheriff's Office said. Many bullets hit Howard's car and one pierced a nearby barbecue grill before hitting a house. Investigators found Sims' gun.

Police said they suspect AK-47s were used in all the shootings but only ballistics tests will provide a definite answer.

Since the Thursday shooting, police have become more vigilant about whom they pull over, Martin County Sheriff's Office Capt. Ed Kirkpatrick said.

"Everyone is taking more precautions. When you stop a car in the middle of the night, you don't think about it. Now you do," he said. "These are very powerful weapons."

The semiautomatic models of the AK-47 have been available for purchase at gun stores since a federal ban on the weapons expired in 2004. The manufacture of 19 weapons, including AK-47s, Uzis, and certain rapid-fire ammunition magazines were banned in 1994, according to Washington, D.C.-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Congress allowed the ban to expire.

Buying an AK-47 requires passing a background check, according to federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Convinced felons and misdemeanor domestic batterers are prohibited from getting the weapons.

"It's as easy to get an assault rifle as it is to get other types of firearms," said Zach Ragbourn, spokesman for the Brady Campaign.

Representatives of the National Rifle Association could not be reached for comment, despite attempts by phone.

"Guns aren't bad. What's bad are the bad guys who use them," said John Patrick, who works at Gator Guns and Archery Center in West Palm Beach, which sells the rifles. AK-47s are relatively cheap and often used in the area for target practice, he said.

Police have no specific information that the assault rifles will be used in more attacks, but they are bracing for the possibility of more violence, Van Deusen said.

"We're fearful that it's going to be a long, hot summer," she said.

So what exactly is an "assault rifle"? Is it just a scary looking rifle/shotgun? Or do they mean any light caliber, semi-auto rifle?

Assault rifle: Medium-length, medium-power cartridge, fully-automatic or select-fire firearms, magazine-fed, designed for infantry troops. In modern armies, these have largely supplanted the infantry rifle, as they provide nearly as good accuracy with far higher fire volume. In some cases, they mount, in addition, a grenade launcher under the barrel. Examples include the M-16, the Chinese or Russian Kalashnikov AK-47, and the Stoner weapons system. These, again, may not be owned by civilians without a Class Ill license.

Bet they never realized that for about $175, you can purchase an SKS & an extended mag for it & BAM, same shit as an AK.

Only thing that would ever give it away as a "scary assault weapon" is the bayonet that comes with almost every one of them.

:werd: it shits me to tears...

here in aus its easier to get a gun ilegally than it is legally (especially handguns), and *everyone* thinks the gun retrictions are working... something is wrong when the media has just a political swing (either way)
