what should i pull for a max today

    500*5

    last week
    525*3

this week? 565 for a single?

    how should I work up?

    I was thinking

    135*10
    225*5
    315*3
    405*1
    495*1
    545*1
565*1 if it goes quickly and easily
    585*1

Don't listen to me, I have only been doing these for a month and a half or so...but I'd go right for the 585 after the 500lbs. :dunno:

I was doing 495x6 when I was doing 565. Start higher though, throw the 6 plates on there and see what happens. If you can't get it, take a 5 minute break and come back and knock down 565

If it were me, I would do it like this:

    135 * 8-10
    225 * 3-6
    315 * 1-3
    405 * 1
    495 * 1
    545 * 1
    585 * 1

If the 545 isn't a big deal to you and the 495 feels light, jump right to 585. That's what I did the first time I pulled 585.

Yeah, but if he tripled 525, 545 is a joke. I'm used to making larger jumps; if you're not used to it you may not want to start today. Maybe go 495-565, if the 565 goes then 585-605. The first time I pulled 600 I went to it right after 495. If you're warmed up it all just feels heavy after a while. *shrug*

585 would be a good test though...who cares if you cant get it up, at least you'll know where you stand.

Just walk in there, and pull 600, no warm up. Tell everyone in the gym to screw off and go home to drink beers.

YOu have to ask yourself what you really want.

I was 3 weeks out from my contest and not sure if I wanted to deadlift, what I could do, if my hook grip would hold, feeling overtrained, etc. Talked to Rhodes who told me not to be a fucking pussy and just go see what I could do on that day. Normally I sort of mentally prepare myself for a big lift days in advance. This was about 20 min before I went to the gym. I went in, and just started working up. 615 went that day and I was so fucking stoked. My point is that you have to decide what you really want. If you think you could do 565 and that will make you happy, then don't bother with 1 pound less. If 565 will make you feel good today, and you 'll do another cycle and re-take a max next time, so be it. Realize though that say you go 495-565, you're pretty much done, if you pull 585 after 565 it just means that you had more than 585 in you... know what I mean? Good luck.

i would venture to say that most people want to see what they can "get up" on a "get it up" testing day

My best dead is 605, at my next meet, should I just open with 650 and see if I can get it up? If I don't get it, at least I'll know where I stand

Just start where you're comfortable, lets say 525x1 (cake right? you pulled three last time?)

then get your 5 plates out... and 2.5's if needed.

    525x1?
    535x1
    545x1
    555x1
565x1 etc... then when the 10 lb increment is too intense slap 2.5's on.

Hardest part about testing my 1RM was giving myself ample recovery time. Whenever I felt fine + 2 minutes just to be safe.

    Good luck.
