so, all this week, I haven't been running as hard as I was last week. every morning, when I wake up, my legs are in pain, like the same kind of pain that I normally would've felt mid-sprint just last week.
anyone have this before? any ideas as to why this could be happening?

yes. but a normal cool down for me is a slow run for a minute or two, then walking around for a minute or two, then... nothing
perhaps the added intensity requires a better cool down than just a short slow run?

That's my first thought too. My dad got them. Try some sole inserts. They work.

    This.

I started running a few days ago and since I'm not used to it my shin splints from my old footballs days came back with a vengeance.

Taping up your ankles and getting good sole inserts helps.
I usually just push through it with the help of IBuprofen and it goes away after a while.
