There is a difference between a patern artist, and a true artist who prefers custom designs and strives to make your work or ideas the best it can be.

So let's get some background on everyone's artists...of course, I'll start,

    Greg Lewis, Madison, IN
He's naturally talented to begin with but went to college for art, and worked for a comic company for a time. :o

The artists at my shop all paint, draw and sculpt outside of work. 3 of them have university art degrees although they've said that everything they learnt in school has no relevance to their tattooing. All 7 artists are capable of doing custom work as well as flash.

That's what makes for a good artist. There are some "artists" in my town that only do flash work.. :lame:

Maybe in the less established places, here the 2 shops I go to are only custom work...the best artists in each shop have long waits to get it. People like tattoos in denver :dunno:

I have zero interest in flash, no matter how cool it looks. I want something no one else has. That's like paying millions of dollars for a print of the Mona Lisa. If you're paying the money, and it's going to be there forever, my thoughts are that it should be something YOU thought of, even if someone else does the art part of it. The IDEA at least should be yours. Getting a copy of something that someone else in your same area might have...not my thing.

The guy that is going to do my tattoos does only his own stuff, he wont cover up, add too, or fix anyone elses work. He has done some amazing things and has done a lot of tattoo design for movies including XXX with vin diesel. (the tattoos he did had to be simplified so what you are seeing isn't his original designs, they took too long to put on)

he takes 2 appointments a day and he is booked until august.

Mine does a full mock up on paper and makes a copy then puts it on my. I have all my original drawnings. I framed them up and my daughter (2) stole them when we moved and I had to put them in her room.

my old artist actually quit tattooing shortly after my last piece to persue his art career. I guess he got some awesome opportunity with a gallery in Floridia.
