I just started running again and I usually only do about a mile a day (yea, weaksauce i know)

However, my calves are sore as hell right now. Should I not run every day? Let them recover first?

1-2 miles is good. I think if you run too long you get a weird gut.

Taking a couple days off can't hurt.

Should I just find some other cardio exercise to do? Recommendations?

The main reason I do it every day is to get into a routine.

When you just start running you need to make sure to give your legs/calves time to recover and gradually build up. If your calves are sore (I'm assuming you mean the front) you need to let them recover, and ice/compress them after running. Look up shin splints. Try swimming, exercise bikes.

No, I've gotten shin splints before and haven't had a problem with them as of yet (this time around)

This is actually the calf muscle on the back side of my leg (well both legs)

I like running because I don't have to go anywhere or pay anything to do it

I used to have big muscular legs. I started running a lot b/c I needed to drop weight to meet weight standards for the USAF. My legs are still strong, but not as big... leaner muscle I guess. I just upped my leg workout to compensate to get my legs back.

If I run too much, my knees hurt or my hips hurt, but thats only if I run more rhan 3 miles

first time out I ran 3 miles, then 6 now about 4 - 5 a couple times a week in sand. Tonight is cardio day, so Im actually looking forward to a jog on the beach. What time is your mile? Like 8 - 10 minutes? That doesnt seem like enough cardio to me ....

You're doing more than average. 2 miles a day is plenty, and I think it's really up to you and what your goals are if u want to run more than that.

Currently I'm only running 2-3 miles a day, but my goal is to hit around 4-5 by the end of the summer or early fall.
