I always wondered what I was waiting for when faced with a black screen for 30 seconds after the green loading bar disappears.

Only Vista would have something built into it to slow it down :mamoru:

um, i take it you did an upgrade and not a clean install? Because on a clean install of vista, the menu is not displayed at all. The menu only displays if there was an un-clean shutdown, or if there are multiple OS entries to pick from.

It's a clean install. Before I did this I would be faced with a black screen for around 30 seconds. Oddly this is between the green loading bar and the windows jewel coming up :ugh:

Since I did this its now exactly 5 seconds. Which is obviously very weird as I know that 30 seconds is meant to be before the green loading bar.

All I know is it certainly sped up my boot time :dunno:

either you fucked something up, or you're remembering this incorrectly. The "list of operating systems" occurs BEFORE winload.exe. The green bar is part of winload.exe.

    bios > mbr > bootmgr > winload.exe

Yes I know it occurs before, i said that.

I am not remembering incorrectly. Last time I started, it took much much longer.

It could also be a coincidence, something else may have changed.

Recently I installed AVG 8.0 and set my page file to 3000mb on both my Windows disk and storage disk. Could that do it?

avg is a service, so it loads after the kernel.
paging is not used until after the kernel and a few key elements load.

have you ever seen the list of operating systems that display if you are dual booting? they have the little timer that counts down for you to make a selection before it makes the default selection? I imagine that is what this value is and would make no difference otherwise.

edit- oh, i see this is already mentioned.
