all i'm trying to do is lose the fat while keeping as much muscle as possible. After my workout yesterday i set the treadmill at the highest incline (15) and walked for about 26 minutes. My heart rate never went under 128 and the machine calculated 350 calories burned after my walk.

Is this a sufficiant type of cardio? My friend who just started his 15 week diet for his next competition told me this is what he does....

    enlighten me please

    128bpm?

Damn, you must've been hurting
    (try to get it higher!)

In the end, Cals in < Cals out = weightloss.

    128 is cardio for retirees.
You might want to break a sweat sometime.

140-150 would be a better target heartrate IMO.

My heart rate gets to 170-180 on just level 10 on a stationary bike.

for fat loss that cardio is fine, though a bit longer would be better. or doing it twice a day.

i float around 150-160 when on the elliptical
    btw i'm 24 5'6 and 210lbs.
highest i've hit is 176, on the machine it says 176 is in the "high" range so i try to back down a bit if i hit it. I could push it higher.

so why is the red zone associated with higher risk?

because if you are old or have heart issues you could keel over (not trying to be witty). its more of a liability issue for them.

higher HR means more total cals burned but it also tends to be more catabolic. moderate and low intensity tends to utilize fats for energy. though both are effective for fat loss.

his SPECIFIC question was about fat loss with LEAST muscle loss.

:ugh: Man, at 11 i'm barely pumpin 128-130 before lifting and about 136-138 after lifting.

As for your intensity, I usually do 10 minutes of 128-130 before work out (on a bike) and 10 minutes of 128-130bpm (on a bike) after my work out.

Then on days off (not including days off after legs) I do real cardio.

Wait, so that chart recommends falling within the green zone. Beyond liability and minor catabolic issues, is there any reason why one shouldn't get their heart rate up to 160-180 regularly?

It can be taxing if you don't have built up your tolerance for it so you could feel drained.
