Saw a local ad on craigslist for a rig and I'm not sure if the price ($500) is good enough to justify the parts. Here's a breakdown on components

Lian Li PC-A05B Black Aluminum ATX Case
    Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R MotherBoard – Intel P35+ICH9R Chipset
Intel Core 2 QUAD Q6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHZ LGA 775 Socket
    Kingston DDR2 1066
    Western Digital VelociRaptor 3.5” 300GB
    Toshiba Sata DVDWRW SH-S223F
    LG DVDWRW – “LightScribe” Drive
    MSI NX8800GTS 512M OC GeForce 8800GTS
120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - Ice Cold
580W ATX 12V SLI Crossfire PSU
    Operating System = Windows XP
    Samsung SyncMaster933BW LCD 19"

Seems like a pretty good deal despite the dated GPU and dying/dead 775 socket. I've been wanting to build a desktop for awhile but definitely won't have the budget for a i5/i7 build now or in the future (poor college student). Any opinions on whether to buy or not?

Dead/dying Socket 775? Do you mean it's obsolete or that the actual socket on that machine's motherboard acts up sometimes? If the latter, don't buy it. If the former, you should be fine.

Check out the big-box stores and the big manufacturers, though, to see what you can get from them that might be newer. With Windows 7 just out, they'll be scrambling to unload any machines they still have with Vista on them, and Vista really isn't a bad OS as long as the machine was built for it.

Most of the systems that currently have Vista on them will come with a free upgrade to W7 now, too....

OS is probably dead last on list of importance since I can get Windows 7 for $30. I don't see buying a pre-built from big manufacturers as a viable option because no matter how cheap they might be, the cost to swap in a decent GPU and PSU would offset any savings. I'm just gonna have to give up on the idea of a desktop until my laptop dies...
