I went into a local shop that my friend has had some great work done at to speak to an artist. I showed him the illustration of what I wanted, and I wanted a few changes made to it. He said it was going to be $25 for the alterations to the image, not that big of a deal.

I went to set up my first session with him, and said I hoped to get all the line work done on my first session. He stopped me and said "Well, we don't pay per session here. We need all of the money up front and we can work from there. It isn't worth my time just to put lines on someone then have them go somewhere else to get more work done on it."

I thought this was a bit strange and asked for my money back and told him "I needed to check my bank account"

He wanted $1,300 up front for the tattoo which he quoted me would be about 7 hours of work.

I've never heard of paying for a full tattoo up front unless you were getting it all done in one sitting. If it was session work there's no way I'm paying for it all up front.

this is my first time ever getting something big, so I am still new to the game. It kills me too, I think he is a great artist and will be able to replicate the piece I want on my leg

I really don't want to take my business elsewhere because I have heard so much good shit about them.

Maybe it is time for me to look somewhere else though.

I can't even find a website or myspace for them. :dunno:

I wouldn't be going there that's for sure. There's no reason to not do a tattoo pay per session.

Offtopic: I know a guy who lives in Murfreesboro.

Who? It is a possibility I know him.

This is going to sound dumb, but where would be a good start for me to look for new places. I mean, I don't want to just yellowpages them. Are there any sites that people talk about shops and they divide them by states?

His name is Troy and he has this on his throat..

There really isn't a website like that. Your best bet is just looking around your area. Asking heavily tattooed people where they get their work done and checking out their portfolios.

That is fucking brutal looking, I love it.

I have been doing that lately and majority of them either had them before they moved to this area, or drive up to dancing dragon 2 hours away in KY

I don't know of any shops in that area or I'd suggest something. I know Troy gets his done somewhere in Nashville. :dunno:

I just highly recommend not going to a shop that wants all the money up front. I work in a shop and that just seems shady to me. It really isn't a waste of the guys time if he's getting paid per session cause he's making money no matter what.

I'd think he would make more money doing pay by session and pay by hour because he could take his time and suck more money out of me.

How astronomical of a tattoo are you getting that they wanted $1300?

$1300 for a big piece isn't that much. Assuming the guy charges $100(and that's being conservative), that's only 13 hours of work. Many pieces take much more time than that.

My half-sleeve has so far cost me £300, and I still need two more hours at £150 and hour. That's about $1000 innit?

I don't know about all these exchange rates...

I'm a skinny guy too, so that's quite a lot of money for quite a small amount of work...

I'm awful with tattoos, I've currently got two half finished ones that I can't finish until I get a job. I suck at organisational stuff.

Sounds like the tattoo artist is addicted to gambling, sex, and/or drugs...

Or he just hates you and/or your tattoo idea

    Go somewhere else for sure

I'm sure you can find a great artist in Nashville, sounds like dude has a complex.

"Not gonna do the line work to have you go finish it somewhere else!?"

    Yea..I don't think so.

My .02~ I worked for a shop in Texas that had a local rivalry with another local shop and they did business like this, somewhat. On numerous big pieces we'd start the outlines, kids would run out of money and go to a cheaper shop for the color work. If they didn't want to pay all of it upfront we could modify the first session to not do ALL the lining/shading so only we could continue the piece. Long story short; the other shop lost too much business to stay open since we started doing that, which was good since they were a shitty shop...
