    My boss just handed me down a dual 500Mhz G4 w. 1gig ram, but it only has a 16mb video card :hsugh: Other than that, this thing feels a lot quicker than what I thought it would... has OS X 10.3.9 on it, I am very happy with it.

    I was looking at buying a new video card for this thing, I was looking @ 128meg video cards. I saw this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25449&item=5207539011&rd=1

    Apparently it's a PC card modded for Mac... good idea?

    something about flashing the rom... obviously any kind of warranty from the manufacturer would be shot. Is it worth the risk or should I just buy a new one from newegg or wherever?

    thanks, i was thinking that too. Are there any reputable places to buy hardware for macs other than newegg? Even there, the selection is not great.
    Any reccomendations as to what card I should get? I do no video editing stuff (as of yet), and will be messing around in photoshop. Geforce4, radeon 9000?

    photoshop isn't intensive on the video card (memory and cpu... but not video card). any 32mb+ card will work.

    to be honest, video cards are misunderstood by the majority of users. As long as it's hardware accelerated, there's no benefit going from a 16mb $30 card to a 256MB $500 card, when not dealing with games -- assuming the 16mb card can handle the screen resolution/refresh-rate.

    It can handle my current monitor (1280x1024), but I am wanting to get a 2005fpw and I am not sure how well it will like that.

    The card I have is a ATi Rage 128 16mb, not sure if it can do hardware acceleration. I sure as hell will not be playing games on this machine... are you saying that I should just save my money?

    Well, if you're going to an LCD, then I'd get something that supports DVI. Outside of that, there really arn't any requirements that a standard card won't meet.

    Will certain cards only fit in G5s and not G4s? Such as this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25449&item=5205596143&rd=1

    Other also say "...for G5." well does that mean that it's only for a G5? Dont they have universal AGP slots?

    I'm very aware of that, but I have gotten great deals from ebay in the past :sad2: So where do you guys reccomend me looking? When I built my previous PC machines, the only place I got parts from was Newegg and Monarch computer... what about Mac parts?

    Don't mind me, I've just gotten burned by doing business with random individuals in the past, which has caused me to only do business with established stores.

    Pricewatch.com. I have yet to find a FireWire enclosure that doesn't work on a Mac. I've found many times that Pricewatch had prices that beat Newegg.

    Here's some companies I've dealt with in the past. I have yet to have a bad experience with any of them:

    * www.tigerdirect.com
    * www.zipzoomfly.com
    * www.censuspc.com
    * www.chiefvalue.com
    * www.datamem.com
    * www.macmall.com
    * www.sonnettech.com

    Do Not Buy Anything From Pricewatch. Whoever Suggests That Must Die.

    I've never been burned because I've never been dumb enough to buy from them. I do, however, work in the industry and I have heard countless stories of others getting burned.

    Um, PriceWatch isn't a store; it's a glorified search engine for components that link you to stores that sell them.

    As for those that got burned, I'm thinking they tried to go for the absolute cheapest price on a part possible and went for the OEM version instead of the retail version. Not my fault they don't have the patience and/or initiative to investigate the integrity of the store before they purchase.

    Caveat Emptor.

    It's fine except for the fact that: a) it has no warranty from the manufacturer, b) it only has a shitty 30 day warranty from the thief that is selling it, and c) it has no hardware acceleration.

    Thank you very much! :)

    What about CD-ROM Drives? I think i just have a DVD/CD-ROM drive and no burner. I have a CD-RW drive that I had in my PC, will that work on my mac or do they have their own connectivity?

    I'm just saying, don't knock flashed cards, it's not like they don't work; there are people that buy cards and flash them to turn a legitimate profit.
