I noticed the cases on this XM193 are discolored at the top quarter of the casing. The three in the middle are federal 55gr .223 for reference.

I fired a couple last time out and they seemed fine, just never saw anything like this before.

    Brand I'm shooting.

What causes this and is it normal from some manufacturers?

That's normal, don't worry about it. All rounds are like that, just some companies clean them up before boxing them up.

  4. Yeah, it's fine. This is like the 3rd time this has been asked recently. They should put a notice on the box that the discoloration is normal and fine.

Thanks guys. I figured it was no big deal, but thought I'd check since ammo I've used before never had it.

    edit.

I also never compared .223 and 5.56 head to head. I thought there was pressure differences, but the size is quite different between the two.

That's annealing, which is a way of treating the metal.

You're just seeing the differences in bullet weight, 5.56/.223 is irrelevant.
