For AF Lenses? I'm in the market for a Nikon and some lenses, but I don't want to be limited only to AF-S lenses. I know the D40 doesn't have a mechanical one, but can someone link me to a guide? Much will be appreciated.

    yes, yes

if you want to start cheap, go for the D50. awesome starter DSLR and it will serve you well for years. solid, durable, easy to use, pretty decent sensor. other good starter body would be a D80

it was discontinued when I bought mine 2 years ago I think. I got it refurbed from Nikon w/ warranty.

at this point, maybe you ought to go for a D80. I don't know what you need, though. www.dpreview.com has detailed reviews of all bodies

Get the D80 and love that it'll last you a little longer than the D50 will.

I don't need something fancy, I want something basic, with a few lenses to hone my skills. I'll probably even want to find some really old MF lenses on the cheap. Don't want to spend too much money right now

Having bought a D40, I should have gone D50 or D80. But I'm guessing getting hold of a D50 with low actuations is becoming increasingly difficult.

the d200 for $600 at best buy is probably the best bang for the buck right now. Not too advanced, not too beginner, AF motor, and built very well...and still produces great shots. I love mine and would only upgrade it if a d700 was within my price range. Since it isn't, it does a great job.

That was for a D50 at E+ condition at $245.

They had a Demo condition for $285 just last Sunday.

That would be alright, but for the shooting I do D200 is just too noisy.

. D50 is better at high ISO than the D200. but nothing beats the D200 @ ISO-100
