I messed up my lower back 2 years ago. I barely started working out again and I have been doing leg presses, but I don't get the same feel from a squat.

    is there any alternatives?

    thanks

    not really

I'd deadlift and squat with low weights and work my way back up.

Before I got more core strength up back squats killed me. Fronts did not.

I am the poster child for back problems crew.

Lunges and leg press would have you covered IMO if you can't do squats or front squats.

my gym has a squat machine. its basically like a leg press except your shoulders are against the sled and your feet against a plate. its works your legs just as good but it wont hit your core like squat does.

    .
Use DBs for a while for weight, then when your ready start working that bar across your back and see how it feels.
This is assuming you're trying to help your back.

1 1/4 body weight squats on balancing pads will work them out for a little while......especially if you do them in tempo like 4-0-2-2-0-1 meaning:
4 - 4 second on the way down
0 - 0 is no pause at bottom of movement
2 - 2 is the rate at which you rise to 1/4 of the way back up
2 - 2 is the rate to decend back down
1 - 1 is the max speed you can go all the way up to starting position

I am doing these as a recovery exercise from my broken back / back surgery......

Yeah I would have suggested Lunges too. Just make sure you keep you gaze straight ahead and your back upright/straight to not aggravate your back.

Just do deep. You can always go for single leg presses. Get it nice and low with an emphasis on your glutes.

Makes sense since the back squat is somewhat of a back exercise.

However, front squats are quad dominant while -depending on bar position- back squats are a mostly a posterior chain exercise. Sure, they both work the legs but it's not really a substitute as they work different muscles.

edit: oh and :werd: on lunges.

    what's wrong with your back?

i found out recently that my back problems are due to spondylolisthesis (a fractured and slipped vertebrae). squats are out for me too. the therapist does allow me to do squats on teh machine though since i can flatten my back.

And these make me feel like the fucking hulk.

I dunno why but I can trap bar deadlift 75 pounds more than I can sumo deadlift and 150 pounds more than I can squat.

Go light, use a belt and slowly work back up. I hurt my lower back pretty bad a year ago and now I'm squatting more than ever before.

  25. The only substitute is more squats.
