Is there a real reason why MS Office doc formats constantly change?

Is there any justifiable reason why Microsoft changes their document formats with every new version of MS Office? For example, I have an older version of Office on my work computer than some other people. In order for me to open documents or spreadsheets that they've created I had to get some converter. Is there any real justification for this other than it is an asshole way for them to pressure people to upgrade? It is shit like this that really annoys me with Microsoft.

By the way, I'm sure other companies do it as well, but MS is the one who seems to be the worst offender to me.

not really constantly, Office 97, 2000, XP, and 2003 all used mostly the same file formats and were compatible excepting certain new and added features.

Office 2007 is the first new file format for office in 10 years, and they really needed to start new with xml compatibility and all.

you can also read/write 2007 format files with office xp and 2003 with a free download from ms

Hmmm, I'll have to look into this. I have done several excel files (in 2007) and forgot to save them as 97-2003 .xls files and emailed them to someone only to find out they can't open them. A time or two I had actually already left work and had to send them the next day.

You would expect them to release a patch to allow previous versions to open the files of the new versions, right? That would be sensible, right? They wouldn't use their position as a monopoly on office software to force an upgrade of perfectly working software you already purchased, because you bought PCs that come with the new version only because the old one is no longer for sale and not for any new features, right? That would be bad.

Yea, it does NOT change that often. It was basically the same from 97-2003. And then 2007 got a new version.

so it was the same for ~9 years.

Every new version of Office eh? That's funny, I remember until 2007, there was just .doc for a long, long time.

Maybe you are using a different version of Microsoft Office?
