For example, DPreview says the 350D and 20D have different sensors, but they both have the same resolution and DIGIC II, so what sort of differences would one expect? :dunno:

body differences? tons..look at the pictures

    20d is metal--350d is plastic
viewfinder is larger on the 20d
more custom functions on the 20d
iso 3200 on the 20d--1600 on the 350d
2 control wheels on the 20d--1 on the 350d
5fps on the 20d---2.5 or 3fps on the 350d i can't remember exactly but it is slower

in terms of image quality I don't have a lot of experience with the cameras, but the 20d has better focusing and more focus points which may help. The 20d also has a more sensitive sensor used with f/2.8 and faster lenses for better accuracy. Noise is better on the 20d too

Sorry, I did mean differences in image quality. Clearly there are superficial differences. :hs:

you will probably get similiar image quality from the 350d and 20d. Faster and more accurate focusing will help the 20d, but for the average user the IQ is not a deciding factor

So in y'all's opinions, would there be any real advantage in spending the extra $$ on a 20D or 30D over a Rebel for someone looking at maybe doing some studio photography but not sports or anything like that? :dunno:

For a starter, it's fine but most will end up selling the 350D in favor of the big brother for the reasons listed above. Changing the settings on the 20D/30D is much quicker and easier due to the second dial.

it is difficult to tell the difference in image quality between the two unless it's for action/sports, where the 20D/30D has superior autofocus. I've taken some great shots with my 350D but I just prefer the 10D & 20D over it because of ergonomics.

one thing - if you get the 350D, buy the Opteka battery grip for $60. It makes a big difference in balancing the 350D when you add on a good lens. I never bothered buying one since I knew I'd upgrade the camera.

Is $879 a good price for the display model 350D with kit lens? :dunno: All the prices I'm seeing online are for body only. :o

Nope, you can get it cheaper... don't ask where though, the deals come and go. Slickdeals is a good place to start.

    :nono:

bhphotovideo.com (most reputable online photo site) has the kit for $654 (if you order before July 15th). Butterflyphoto also has it for even cheaper, but their customer service people are assholes.

You can get the body for around $560

beachcamera is a good retailer.. bought 2 lenses from them no problems.. both shipped the next morning.

I wouldn't even touch butterflyphoto after reading the reviews

I ordered my 30d from pcnation.. they were the ONLY retailer besides dell to have it on sale (10% off), and they had great reviews. I ordered at 7pm one night and the camera shipped the next morning.. had it 2 days later.

Would there be any reason why someone like myself would get a 20D with a kit lens instead of the 350D and a nicer piece of glass? (For a first DSLR.)
