Was thinking about the money making abilities of taking a design that is expensive and improving it and selling them cheap, like 75 bucks above cost. Like the arms sir and the vltor casv

I dunno, just an idea, I have cad exp and can get a cnc lathe off ebay pretty cheap.

cliffs: Just talking out my ass possibly move along.

Maybe, maybe not. With firearms, "You get what you pay for" is the general rule. And most people won't cheap out on something that may one day save their life.

I mean for rails I would just get alum square bar and cut it down to length, use a 3 axis milling machine and a metal lathe to make it.

Would you parkerize or anodize it?

    a demand? somewhat.

enough manufacturers out there that already make a quality, proven product for not much more than your probable sale price that'll keep you from ever getting your foot in the door? definitely.

yeah but would have to look at an outside company to do that, most likely parkerize on steel and anodize on the alum but if I just stayed with alum i could get a setup to do the anodizing myself.

reason why I'm asking is I'm looking for something to keep me busy and make me money. I have money to invest but I want something I'll enjoy ya know. Hell I could make stripped lowers for ars on a 3 axis machine

That'd be cool, but I think it'd be a little more involved since you would technically be making a firearm.

yeah for the lowers, I'd have to stamp it with a company name and address and give it a serial and stuff. I dunno what regulations i'd have to meet as well.

Just some advertising advice, use "inexpensive" and not "cheap.";)

yeah I might make some quad rails instead, the lowers have too many cuts and tolerances to deal with but check this out

I may be mistaken but I think there is so much competition in the ar parts market that if they could be made much cheaper, someone would be doing it. I'd be sure to do lots of homework before buying gear and finding out that you can't actually match what is available.

well ultimately it gets to a point where people look to see how much of a profit they can make. the yhm have nothing to them. It costs them about 10 bucks to make plus they have people working for them so the cost is going to be higher. they might be making a 50 dollar profit off of each one but if they hire someone to do the work their cost will be higher.

    edit:

just went to look at some pricing and just noticed how much square bar has gone up, I'd have to melt it down and cast it in a mold and then machine it.

    HOLD THE FUCKING PRESSES.

Wait, you can get the tooling to make AR lowers? I know of a company that has a unique design that needs a company to start putting their stuff out. Both AR-15 sized and AR-10 sized lowers.....

If you can seriously get a manuf FFL and guarantee the quality on them, I'll give them your contact.

you only need a 3 axis cnc milling lathe and a bunch of collets and a bunch of bits to make lowers. I used to make cnc stuff in college before I switched to computers. You only need about 10k startup costs for a small output or about 50k for a larger setup. You need to make the jigs for each phase of making a lower. Then set the first jig up and run off like 50 lowers, then set the next jig up and do the next to the 50 again, rinse repeat.

Considering you can get YHM carbine and midlength rails for under $100, I think you would have a hard time selling enough to make it worth your time. To do lowers you would have to have a manufacturers FFL.

I've thought about doing something similar.
