1-55 was pretty damn good, first few arcs were awesome and Vaughn's Return of the King arc was excellent. After that Bryan Singer was supposed to come to the title and breathe some new life into it after a short arc featuring some indie writer named Robert Kirkman :o

Singer never found the time to commit and Kirkman's stories were tired and boring, he didn't have the freedom to do with these characters as he can with his own.

I went to my boxes and checked, Kirkman went to issue 66. That would be a good stopping point.

Like I said, the stories aren't bad, just meh.

New X-Men run in 2000-01 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly was pretty damn good too. The current X-Factor written by Peter David is one of my favorite ongoing books right now. Check it out if you're an obscure X-Men fan. His pitch was to include all the mutants most people didn't care about.
