I'm a gun noob looking to buy one for home defense. Is it anything I need to be picky about? :noes:

I was thinking about heading to gander mountain to see if they have any Supernova Tacticals. I've heard the M4 has less recoil, but not sure I want to spend $1500.

Oh, and are optics on a shotgun advantageous?

no. man up and train with it. You'll get used to it and its devastating on bad guys. Get a pump gun. For home defense, no optics needed. Get a good buckshot load and you're golden. A bead is sufficient for a sight.

    edit for stupidity...

the above are my opinions, so ymmv

I was referring to the Benelli M4, not an AR.

Not at all provided you you keep it to your shoulder and lean into it properly.

What about shell size? Is 3.5" 00 buck going to recoil much more than 2.75"?

I'm not that big and I can shoot 100 shells in an afternoon so recoil isn't bad at all from 12ga. Keep in mind a gas operated shotgun like the M4 will have significantly less recoil then a pump shotgun.

For HD get a 870 with some #4-00 buckshot, optics are not needed, just point and shoot.

The simple answer is yes, anytime the cartridge gets bigger then is going to be more recoil.

Go to a shooting range rent a shotgun and if you can handle it.

If of course recoils more but still nothing objectionable. For home defense you don't need to be using anything other than 2.75" anyway.

What makes you say that? 3.5" shell has more pellets so I assumed it would be better. :dunno:

Dammit to hell I want a Saiga 12....

As far as the recoil on a 12ga? Lean into it man, I'm essentially a newbie in the gun world and I fired off 100 rnds in an afternoon just goofing off with it the weekend after I bought it. 6'1, 200lbs.

I don't plan on going to a range. I have plenty of room out back to shoot.

It's not that bad. I put a Knoxx Spc Ops stock on mine with the recoil reducer for extended range sessions, it's a pussycat now.

I'd rather shoot my 590 one handed then with the metal stock I have. :o

Benelli M4's have hardly any recoil. M2's have more.

um have you never heard of newton's second and third laws of motion??? pushing more mass is going to have more recoil when compared to less mass in the same firearm.
