A&P is the d300 worth the $500 premium over 40d?

I sold my 20D several months ago as I was tempted by my step dad who offered me access to all his nice Nikkor lenses. I have yet to buy a new camera. I was prepared to buy a d300 until I realized that it's quite a bit more expensive than the 40d.

It is hard for me to ignore the temptation of a free library of good glass made available to me but I am also having difficulty justifying the $500+ price premium of the d300.

I don't know what to do. :run:

if you have access to nice glass then the extra 500 would be worth it. Dont you think?

500 really isnt that much if it comes with good glass. but it would be dependent on what the "good glass" is.

why the fuck would you buy a canon if you have access to 'nice nikkor glass' for free?

bodies are disposable. Glass is where the $$ is at.

Amen!!! I've come to that realization lately... and as soon as I start booking high dollar shit, I'm going to buy the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 to replace the Sigma. Until then, Sigma it is. :o

There's way too much Nikon love going on in here...:ugh2:

    :fawk:

If you have a ton of nice Nikon glass to use, the D300 would be the way to go.

    IMHO, no.

Right now the 40D is only like $1000 even. One thing you also need to consider is not just what body youre buying but what SYSTEM youre BUYING IN TO.

When it comes to lenses, Canon has a larger lineup with more fast primes for less money than Nikon does.

Canon has been leading the cutting edge in photography for more then 20 years. They were the first with USM focus, they were the first with IS in the lens, and they were the first with a real FF sensor for the masses.

The only Nikon camera I would consider looking at is the D3 and that is one hell of a camera (with one hell of a price tag). I really like the D300, and if they were closer in price, Id probably tell you to go that route but I dont think that its worth the 500 (or 700 now) dollar difference.

I vote D300 on the mere fact that you have someone close you can share knowledge with, and especially glass. We don't know what glass he has but the fact that he has them helps a lot.

My family loves Nikon. I stole my father's 30+ year old manual FE film and my Uncle PRISTINE condition F4, which he used a grand total of less than 100 actuations.

The glass they have is basic stuff but I can grab those bodies whenever I'm in a crunch.

$1500 body + free glass (im assuming he doesn't have junk, and no idea how many different lenses he has, but at least 2 or 3 (hopefully even more)) = $1500

    or

    $1000 + $400-$700+ (remember only 1 lens) = $1400-$1700+

either body will take great pics, It a no-brainer

are you trying to make a claim that he d300 has more noise than the 40d based on one weird ass unknown photo?

 Source? Test conditions? It's nowhere near that bad. That D300 "noise" is obviously fake. Real digital noise doesn't look like that.

I found it amusing... :big grin:

and the 40d is a great camera, so I don't see any reason why I would pay 500 more for a d300.. if your lens selection is really that good then it might be worth it.

either camera will take great photos, the part that will matter more is the glass thats in front of the camera (and the person behind the camera). if you can use high quality glass if you buy the nikon, but are going to have to use a kit lens from canon, then go with the nikon. if the glass you are borrowing isn't that great, then for the same money as a d300 you could get the 40d and better glass.

Honestly I don't know what his collection consists of, nothing amazing. I think he has 3-4 lenses. I know the last one he purchased was a 17-55 2.8. I think it was around $1000. Not sure I'd feel comfortable borrowing something so expensive anyway.
