I've been thinking about this for a while now. The 580ex II is a hell of a flash. I love it. But I don't use have the features since I always shoot in manual.

But here are the things i do use that I like:

    Head swivel in all directions
    Quick recharge
    Almost NO sound while charging.

But beyond that I might as well be using my 540.

    Here are the cons:

Expensive (I already own it but could sell for almost what I paid)
Doesnt work with my Cactus triggers
    More features than I need.

So I dont know.. Is there a lesser flash that swivvles liek the 580? And recharges as quick?

No, no. I have 2 540s' and one 580 EX II and I'm wondering if I need to keep the 580

what about a 430EX? I would imagine you could use the cactus triggers with them, right? and half price. It has a lesser GN and has no master switch

They work pretty damn far too! I did a quick test last night, and that antenna mod must have helped! I got about 500 feet before it stopped firing.

I shoot in manual mode (on the camera) as well but I'm more than happy to let my 580ex do all the work via ettl when it comes to figureing out flash exposure.

Its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
