Is it true that it gets soft at f/2.8?

    i've got the 17-55 2.8, that's a pretty solid lens.

Every lens has a "sweet spot". The apperature and focal length range at which it is best. There will always be a range during which it is weakest as well.

Most zooms are slightly soft at their widest apperature. It's just a fact of life.

But the 24-70L f2.8 is the lens that most other zooms are compared to for image quality.

The biggest caveat is the size and weight of the 24-70L. It's affectionately known as "the brick".

I don't shoot mine wide open that often, but never thought it was soft.

its good, but the Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 is just as good on optics, but slower in AF, not weather dealed and a little more DOF. On the other hand, the L has about the worst consistency off the line of any L, and the Tammy comes with a 6 year warranty and costs a third of the L

Don't fucking type to me like that on this forum. I have a lot of friends in high places on this board who just love to come down hard on pantywastes like you. Don't question it. You need to be a little more careful who you call names otherwise I might have to let my moderator friends know what a fag you are, and you definitely don't want that shit to happen if you want to continue posting on this forum. Faggot. Get back.
