Ok, I am in hong kong now and would like to buy something better than the kit lens to take pics with. I can get the Tamron new for $356USD or spend the extra dough and get a used L for $576USD.

My question is, is it worth the premium?

I currently have the kit lens and a 50mm. Looking to also obtain the 70-200mm f4, so the money saved will go towards that.

EDIT: Also I found a place that carries the used 580Ex for the same price as a new 430Ex, should I just play it safe and get the 430ex or is the 580 a big uprgade?

depends on what you do. AF speed, weather sealing, etc can be very needed features that the L just kills the Tamron in.

If the 580 is the same price as a 430 and it works, get it

Yes the 17-40L is worth the extra price. I started with a 10-22 and it just wasnt crisp enough. I still use the 10-22 a lot but the 17-40L is an excellent lens that is worth the investment.

Get the 580, the 430 dissapoints me without wireless capabilities.

    The only reason I'd buy a 17-40 f/4.0L over the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is if I use a 1D series body or a 5D and couldn't afford the 16-35 f/2.8L. For a crop body, I'd rather use the Tamron.
