is running on an elliptical machine as good as actual running?

to make a long story short, i may have torn my meniscus or my MCL (partial tears), i wont know until i get the MRI back. so i am consigned to the elliptical and a bike. i was wondering if you get the same workout cardio wise as you would actually running.

Is it the same as running, no.

I sure as hell sweat more on it than on the treadmill, that's for sure.

I dont plan on running at all, at least not until i get the ok from the doc. he said that i could do the elliptical and bike because they are low impact exercises that have alignments that dont change. I wouldnt worry about it but i have an allstar match coming up (if i happen to be selected for it, and if my knee is ok) and i can't afford to lose my conditioning for it, plus i need the exercise for health purposes

haha good luck wrestling with a torn meniscus or MCL, i had the same thing happen to me last year.

if you can walk on it and it doesn't swell up after movement, you are better off than i was.

oh it swells up quite nicely, it was green/purple (still is) but it def. isnt a complete tear, just a partial the knee isnt loose enough, the impact was so ugly (nasty bruising and instant swelling) that the doc wanted to have the MRI anyhow. I already wrestled on it, it doesnt afect me too much with the exception of mat wrestling just because of the impact on the knee.

I wrestled 1 more match with the torn meniscus. Pinned the dude in a minute and got my 1st place. After that, I was done for the year.

If it's all you can do, that's what you need to do :) Try going by HR to judge how hard you're working and ignore the retarded, erroneous calorie counters on all the machines.

yeah i know... i just equate sweating with working hard... and working hard with burning calories

i barely sweat at all on the elliptical, but i sweat buckets on the treadmill... oh well
