    Asus A8N5X (ordered)
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
2 GB Ram (whatever is the cheapest)
    1 Seagate 200GB HD
3 74GB WD Raptors running on a Netcell raid card running raid 3
    dvd burner
    and dvd rom

i run alot of applications at once and do photo editing and dable with video editing
i really wanna do it to see the preformance gains and it would be nice to have the protection

Do you mean RAID 5? If you want redudnecy then RAID 5 is the way to go with 3 drives. You get a performance bump (not going to be an amazing increase but it's there), redudency, and a good use of the drive space.

If you actually mean RAID 3 (yes, there is such a thing although I'm sure tard will try toi say otherwise) then skip it and go to RAID 5. The reason RAID 3 is rarely seen is that it is not efficient compared to RAID 5.

:werd: I was going to ask where on the list of parts was a RAID 3 capable controller. RAID 5 is better anyway.

Hrm. That sounds like a whole lot of marketing BS. Considering half the article (all those green boxes) was sourced FROM netcell, and their "SPU" sounds a lot like any other RAID card on the market. Most RAID cards have hardware XOR (which, btw, is NOT exclusive to RAID 3) and many have a dedicated I/O processor.

Hexus ran an OEM netcell card (from XFX) against a Promise RAID card (remember, promise has no dedicated I/O controller, like the Netcell has) and it really didn't do all that great:

thanks.....that made me decide that i probably won't get it
so i should run software (nvidia) raid 0
    preformance > protection imo

If you don't mind possibly losing every thing on the drive, sure.

It's easy, don't do it. Get a RAID card. They don't cost that much.

Software RAID is prone to failure, much more so than hardware RAID. I say shop around and get just about any RAID card you want. Promise, LSI, Highpoint, even the Netcell card. I think the Netcell is overhyped, but I'm sure it works fine.

You need drivers, but its no big deal. Not sure why netcell would advertise "no drivers". Who cares? Typically, you hit F6 when booting off the XP CD and insert the disk when it asks.

Hang on, are you saying that the RAID 0 array and PATA/SATA JBOD array are really only software raid?

I'm using the built in nvidia raid controller, sure, but its called a RAID controller for a reason isnt it?

    what?
it still is software raid and relies on the CPU

No, software RAID is when no controller is involved and the OS creates the array. Your thinking of hardware assisted RAID, where the drivers offload I/O processing to the CPU rather than use a dedicated I/O processor on the card. BIG difference.

Dynamic drives is just asking for trouble. Stay away from software RAIDs.

How do the read/write times compare between RAID5 and RAID0+1 (ie mirrored stripe set) Say you use 4 identical drives in either case.

The RAID 0+1 (or 1+0 for that matter) should be faster.
