So I bought into the hype and perhaps the marketing but mostly word of mouth about how awesome the d40 is.

I picked up a d40 over a month ago and have slowly been learning about all aspects of photography and all that goes with it.

I've been looking at lenses for a while now and realize how screwed over we are with this AF-S business.

identical lenses but one being af-s and one being whatever else will have such a huge price gap and yet unless im willing to manual focus fulltime i'll have to pay 2-3x the price in most cases.

case in point the fixed focal nikon 50mm 1.8d vs it's AF-S brother.

is it like this with the other camera manufacturers?

I don't think its a hustle more than its a marketing ploy to get people to buy entry level DSLRs because they think they take better pictures.

it's marketing. the low end digital slr's can't use older nikkor lenses.

but then if you spend triple the cash you can get the d90 which does have the autofocus built into the body.

d40/d60s = soccor moms, and ppl who don't want to be confused w/ all those functions that want to get better pics than they can get w/ their pns.
so what's the name of your son's team? :o

Talking about the cameras in general. Your avg consumer doesn't know the main difference between the lenses and quality. They just think of the camera 'looks' pro and can have interchangable lenses, it takes great pictures or at least better pics than your run of the mill P&S!

    Am a missing something?

A D40 with kit lens DOES take much better pictures than even the best point & shoots...

The quality is much better, and if most people are anything like me, having something nice makes me want to learn how to get the most out of it, therefore purchasing my D50 2 years ago did both take better pictures and make me a better photographer (if you wanted to call me that 2 years ago :mamoru:)

In all honesty though, I think it comes down to skill more than it does money. I think even your D40s and D60s can produce some great images if you're proficient with the settings and have an understanding of how things work on a DSLR!

IMO the only lens you're really missing out on as a consumer is the 50/1,8

And Nikon solved that problem a week ago. They're perfectly capable cameras, and there is no "being screwed over". You have a great camera, learn how to use it, and you can easily get great pictures, all the time.

Taking out the AF motor makes the body smaller and slightly cheaper. The vast majority of D40/D60 owners have little interest in a prime lens anyways.

Seriously, no reason to not use and AFS lens anyway, they focus so vastly superior to non afs lenses that I would never buy a non afs lens anyway.

Yes, D2X with 17-55mm. D40 was way to small for me that I bought a grip for it. Would buy another body now, but no cash and I mainly use the D40 for its fast flash sync.(Two strobes)

You hit the peak of the D40 pretty quickly if you fall head first into photography :mamoru:

I've been saying for ages that those cameras are designed for 1 purpose and they do it quite well. they introduce people to the world of digital SLR photography.

Some people will get into one of these cameras and be happier then all hell and never need more than that. Others will get one and quickly outgrow it and need something more.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a D40/60, they can use any lens Nikon makes. The thing missing is the autofocus, but not having autofocus does not preclude you from using the lens.

    my progression D40/18-55, D40/18-135, D80/28-70 2.8:o, D300/28-70 2.8

yes I have a 50/1.8 that gets used very rarely, only when I absolutely need that extra speed in low light situations as my 28-70 has been an awesome portrait/all around lens. I am eyeing and drooling for the 70-200/2.8VR tho:o. All of which can be used with the D40/60.

Then sell your fucking camera and buy what you want, this is not hard...:ugh2:

The constant bashing of the lower grade cameras gets pretty silly, learn how to take pictures, stop trying to fix personal downfalls with gear.

People did amazing work with one ISO speed film for 36 shots in their cameras for years.

D80`s are pretty cheap. some ppl should do a little research up front so they are not crying after the fact.
