I'm prior service and have been out for a year and a half. I'm joining up again and I just seen my recruiter. My last ASVAB was over 2 years ago and he told me I have to go by those scores. I told him I been studying and wanted to retake the test to get a better score for a job I want. He told me since I've taken it I can't retake it, even if it was a while ago. I don't believe him, and I wanna make sure I really choose something I will like so I want to retest, can someone tell me if hes right or not?

This information is taken from Military.com and is written by Rod Powers

" If one is not in the service, the ASVAB scores are valid for two years. If one took the test over two years ago, and now wants to join the service, they would have to retake the ASVAB.

There are special provisions that govern ASVAB retests. With the exception of the Navy (discussed below), one cannot re-take the ASVAB for the specific purpose of raising line-scores in order to try and qualify for a specific job. One can only retake the ASVAB if they fail to achieve the minimum AFQT score required to enter that specific service. For example, lets say someone is joining the Army and got an overall ASVAB score (AFQT score) of 50, but didn't didn't get a composite score high enough for the specific job they wanted. That's just tough. Because they scored high enough overall to join the Army, they cannot re-take the test."

From what that says if you have been out of the service for over two years then it would seem to me that you would have to re-test. Hope that helps.

Yea so I sent him an email stating I asked him about a retest because I remember seeing something online about it only lasts for 2 years, I double checked and it says it's good for 2 years and for him to check that out and get back to me. I'd love to retake the test after studying :)

    magic words: I won't enlist unless ______________

you'll get what you want - especially if it's just a fucking asvab retest, trust me, even if it is against the rules, I've seen recruiters break rules far more important than this one to get a recruit in, this should be nothing for him... see another recruiter.

yep...the only stipulation is that there's like a 30 day "cool off" period. You have to wait 30 days before a retake.

He sent me an email back saying I was right about the whole 2 years thing, that he should have noticed that before, and that he found out my overall test was a 43. He told me to study the ASVAB book I got (2008 ASVAB by KAPLAN) and retake the test.

Well I didn't study for it plus I'm terrible at math. This time I have the newest ASVAB book out and I'm studying.

 I am guessing you didn't do to well either.

In regards to the special olympics quip, your ASVAB score is one of the most important numbers in your military career. It decides what is behind door #3. Of course I am going to laugh at a 43, shows poor prep, and a future of rucking the base plate.

I didn't think that the ASVAB was something you studied for? I got a decent score and I took it half way through my school day a night after i was awake till like 4 trying to finish a book report lol.

I remember questions like "what does a ringing noise when you turn the steering wheel mean?"

I dunno, to me it seemed like things you learned throughout life and memorized from experience and shit. The science/math; if I remember correctly was simply multiplication and what does litmus paper do with acids type shit.

If you got a 43 brush up on your math, mainly the simple shit because there aint gonna be any calculus on that. Go outdoors, do hands on shit and you should be ok for the rest of the test.

Depending on when you took the ASVAB, the current ASVAB is much different than the version administered in the 90's. It does include some trig and college level algebra. It is a much more difficult test, and in my opinion and much improved test to meet the tech heavy military we currently have.

Dude seriously. The "math" is pretty much HS algebra 1. Not to mention that it is only 2 out of 9 sections meaning you pretty much failed at everything
