Is it safe to assume now that Ford will be the last surviving American automaker?

I think that Ford will get some of GM and Chryslers market share for the time being. Their not out of the woods yet though.

GM should not get that $30B.

Of course GM will come back. But I don't think they deserve to get $30B from the gov't, they just need to fail and file Chapter 11.

if they file ch 11, who is going to buy a car from them? keeping out of bankruptcy is their only chance to avoid liquidation.

    Restructuring > liquidation.

it isn't happening currently. bankruptcy is the ONLY way they can tell the unions to eat dick and curb all of their labor expenses.

yeah, but while restructuring in the current climate, GM will have an incredibly hard time moving metal. FAR more difficulty than they experience now.

I think the problem is how many brands each of these automakers has divided into. Most automakers have 1-2 core brands and that's it, right?

    Nissan Infiniti
    Toyota Lexus Scion
    Honda Acura

American Automakers have a shitload of brands. Keep a 'general public' a 'performance' and a 'luxury' brand. Maybe even blend the last two together.
