Is it really stupid to buy a Porsche 996 with high miles?

I'm not saying i'm seriously contemplating it, but i'm surprised that high mileage 996's are going in the $20k range.

I thought the 6-cylinder engine was tried and true, and that makes me believe these cars would last forever. But then I figure you would see a lot more people driving Carrera's.

Atleast you know its been driven. In my opinion if these cars have good service records then you shouldnt spend to much time worrying about miles.

I bought my 968 with 120k miles... was very sure to find one with impeccable records, etc.

As long as it's been cared for, I don't see the problem. Be sure to get it inspected.

Be careful if it is a pre '02. They are known to have rear main seal (RMS) problems which can lead to an engine replacement which can run up to $12,000

I'm suspecting that the cars you saw are '99s which have all sorts of problems....
