Well my laptop internal drive is completely dead and won't read any CD. Is it safe to use an external drive to boot my recovery CD?

As long as the BIOS has support for booting off a USB device, you should be fine.

Well I'm not sure if my BIOS support it. I have a Windows XP, P4 processor, is that ok?

I'm worry that once my HD is deleted, it won't recognize the external drive.

Go into the BIOS and see if there is a setting to enable booting off of a USB device.

Ok, another dumb question, how do I go into the BIOS? Is it device manager?

When your computer first powers up, hit either <F8> or <del> - depending on the machine.

This is before it starts to boot.

Ok I don't see that option when I go in the BIOS, that mean it's already enable right?

In the boot option, I see Removable Device, CD/DVD Drive, Harddrive, and Network Boot. The removable device should be my external drive right? But when I boot my laptop, the external drive seem to be running the disk but it won't boot up the recovery program. Then after a while, it just boot windows normally. What can I do?

Looks like you're looking in the right place. As to why it's not booting :dunno:

If your machine is booting to windows, why do you need to boot the recovery disk?

I have so much craps on there that I decided to start over, plus the computer was so damn slow. Anyway, I still couldn't get my external drive to boot the recovery disk even though it is running when I restart my computer. Is is because of my drive? Should I get a different one?

It sounds like the removable device is the right one. You'll want to set that first in the boot sequence.

If it works, you'll see a line that says press any key to boot off CD...

Yea I did set the removable device first. I don't know why it's not booting up the disc, maybe it's the external drive.

It could be the CD too. See if you can try another bootable disc.

Not all CD-ROM drives can support botting off of them. I would think that if the drive is fairly new, it should be.

I only have one Recovery CD and it's never been used. The drive is new too, I just bought it, it's a Sony DVD/CD recordable drive, maybe I should exchange this for a different one.
