Is it just me, or does it seem like game graphics have started to plateau?

Compare the graphical differences between a game that came out in 1995 and one that came out in 2000. For instance, compare the visual differences between Chrono Trigger (1995) on SNES, and Chrono Cross (2000) on PS1.

Then compare one that came out in 2005, and compare it to one that came out in 2010. For instance, Battlefield 2 (2005) on PC, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (2010) on PC. Not a huge difference.

It especially seems like things have slowed down in the last 2-3 years. To me, BioShock 2 doesn't look much better than BioShock.

Once 3d sprites became the staple in gaming it came in stages. Textures, then models, then lighting etc. but I think that's pretty much it short of photo realism.

I don't mean to turn this into a fanboy war, but since console games are what sells most companies are going to focus on that, which is obviously very limiting. If PC's were still a mainstay in gaming we'd probably see graphics still advancing.

i have to disagree with the BF2 vs BC2 compare, BC2 looks a lot better than BF2 i think.

as for Bioshock 2, yeah it does not look that much better than Bioshock in fact it seems worse at times. i liked Bioshock 2 (just beat it a 2nd time), but textures not being loaded up and popping in all the time is a bit disappointing.

Yeah. But my point was the visual differences between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross is much greater than the differences between BF2 and BC2. Yes, BC2 does look better (unless you have to turn the settings down to medium because the beta was not well optimized  ), but it's not like the difference between sprite and 3D.

That's not entirely true. It's slowed down, but just a few years ago there were no quad-core consumer CPUs :dunno:

Graphics won't get much better this (console) generation. It's sad, but games are being primarily focused on development for consoles. The only true companies that will push the graphical limit will be valve, assuming they are working on a new source engine, and crytek.

  8. Are you taking into account things like how many polygons are in action at once?

It's all well and good if each individual model looks the same, but what if there's twice as many?

In some games they have a viewable distance in game of about 100m and might have your avatar and 4 baddies at once and it might look great, but another game might have a viewable distance of 1000m and might have you and 50 baddies at once.

crysis still to this day looks amazing

    so does far cry 2.

crytek makes amazing albeit demanding game engines.

I honestly didnt think bioshock2 looks any better at all.

SO much so that the game felt like a rehash and after about 40 min that i gave it after i first put it in, i have yet to come back to it.

But i also have heavy rain, mass effect 2, bfbc2, and then in march here the real deals hit with gow3 and mlb the show 10.

Graphics have plateaued somewhat, but this will happen with all gens. Once this does happen though, usually the quality of games/length/originality/overall awesomeness has to be used to sale games from that point until a next gen.

Did the exact same thing. Played it for about an hour and gave up on it. The story telling mechanics in Bioshock are terrible. Picking up random records and listening to them doesn't make for a great story.

yeah but I don't really mind

graphics are something that you shouldn't notice, ideally; they should seamlessly convey information so that you don't think about them

we're getting closer to that point now, which is cool

It's the fault of Conslole focused development.

I agree. Basically the closer they get to looking like real life, the fewer improvements they can make.

if either ps3 or xbox 360 can't handle it, then it won't be widely developed.

Crytek's Cryengine 3 has been dumbed down for consoles. Looks worse than Cryengine 2

it is clearly the fault of console games

console games vastly outsell pc games
therefore developers focus on console versions
consoles have static hardware, and therefore the graphics for their games are pretty much stuck at one level
pc games are mainly console ports now, there is no incentive to vastly improve graphics

just look at crysis, which 2 years on has still not been matched graphically. it sold very poorly. Why would anyone try to duplicate its failure?

the good news is that when new consoles come out, the graphics will start getting better again

the bad news is that we are seeing longer and longer gaps between console releases

and even more locked down environments too. Not to mention outrageous monopolistic prices on peripherals and accessories.

I think a lot of games now are throwing in a ton of subtle effects, which IMO is better than making things more photo realistic

    :wavey: @ BloG

We'll see more graphic amazingness with new consoles, new engines and of course, ATi and Nvidia slugging it out with the next generation of hardware. Give it another year or two.
