I was thinking about this the other day. Obviously if you had a severe economic collapse worldwide that was sustained, such that countries couldn't maintain a modern military...you'd see a return to prior forms of warfare.

However, it just seems that large standing armies have gone the way of the dodo bird. I'm not talking civil war style, because obviously military techniques/strategy changes. However, it seems like high value targets are easier to take out now. A few precise hits here or there and an entire military collapses due to lack of support.

I'm just wondering after all that rambling, if something large on the scale of WWII will ever happen again. Seems that with this many people in the world, it's tough to get a conflict of that magnitude. There is no more expansion into new territory and it's usually between 2 bordering countries. Thoughts? Insight? I'm an idiot? Agree? or you have no idea what I just typed?

Let China get pissed off and you will quickly see a return to conventional mass on mass warfare.

Need more conventional warfare. ROE where you return fire only when fired at is ftl.

There was a large decline in civilian deaths, I don't know why you want more conventional warfare. :dunno:

The decline in civilian deaths is worth the inconvenience of not being able to shoot indiscriminately

Right, it's very tactical now. I just see it more as warfare between regions than large countries or groups of countries.

If anything, the warfare we are experiencing, in Iraq for example, takes a larger toll on the civilian population i.e. insurgents blending into the population, terror tactics against civilians, human shields, etc. The days of indiscriminate carpet bombing on civilians is over(at least for the US), and precision strikes are the status quo. Conventional warfare, between trained and uniformed soldiers, makes it much easier to identify the enemy.
