    Please recommend options...

i have a friend who is just nuts about getting an ipod, but considering how trendy it is, im pretty sure there must be some other gizmo out there that outdoes it for the same or less money, but isnt as popular because of apple's marketing dept. :x:

    am i crazy? :hs:

the Creative Zen beats the ipod in every way, imho. And they've got 5 or 6 models to give you exactly what you want.

iPod is the only device that gives you access to the largest library of online music, if you're into the "legit downloads".

iPod has the easiest to use interface and menu system as described by every major magazine reviewer.

iPod has the most intuitive controls of any MP3 player, according to major reviewers.

as for aesthetics, all the others just look cheesy. the Rio Carbon is just plasticky, iRiver has had its fair share of problems for me to continue to dodge them (like a hyundai). the Creative Zen and Zen micro arent bad, but the micro is just butt ugly. The samsung is labeled with "napster"... i'll be damned if i advertise for what used to be a great file-sharing program before they sold out.

that's what convinced me to buy one for myself and one for the gf. :dunno:

Zen if you don't care about drag droping file ability.

iRiver if you want to be able to drag drop files on and listen to the radio, and be damn cool.

If you don't need a hard drive, but a PSP when it comes out and get a 1 gig Memory stick. That should make him nice and jelous.

The Zen and the Dell DJ are the same unit. Only Dell often offers better deals on the DJ. Just gotta catch it at the right time.

I personally have both. iPod at work and DJ at home/in car. I find the software for the iPod better, but the DJ unit itself feels better to me. I hate the circle scrolly thing on the iPod. The DJ scroll wheel is much easier to use. The iPod is skinnier. The DJ is shorter. The DJ has been getting better battery life.

I saw an ad in Stuff mag for the Creative Zen Micro. 5 gig hd, removable battery, fm tuner and fm recorder. it's the only one i've found that has all of the mentioned options together. i guess it depends on what options you're looking for.

I've looking at the Archos AV400 series personally more expensive but they do have other models for less.

Buying the Creative Zen Jukebox 30GB. Can get it for $200 or lower, also works as a protable HDD i believe. Wouldn't want an iPOD. If i was given one, i'd sell it and buy the Zen, and use the extra money for usmthin else.

iPod + iTunes + Airport Express cant' be beat.

I'm in the living room right now. Have the music on my desktop iTunes shared, controlling it through my PowerBook iTunes and piping it through the Airport Express to my home stereo.

When I leave the house, I grab my iPod and have plenty of music to go. Rip my favorites in Apple Lossless so there's no loss in sound quality over the original CD. The interface is dead simple, though 90% of the time, I just end up hitting the "Shuffle" option from the main menu, hit the lock on the top, so I can toss it in my pocket without worrying about accidental inputs while it's in my pocket and I'm in business.
