    Heres my predicament:
Im gonna be buying a laptop for next fall, and I knowits gonna be an apple. Until recently I was sure I was going to get an ibook, but after comparing specs and prices, I'm not so sure. Heres what I'm deciding between (this includes a student discount)

    ibook 1.2ghz
    768 mb ram
    60 gig hd
    airport extreme
    bluetooth
    32 megs video ram
    dvd-rom/cd-rw

    or

    pbook 1.5 ghz
    512 mb ram
    60 gig hd
    airport
    bluetooth
    64 megs video ram
    dvd-drom/cd-rw

the ibook will be 1,200 and the power book will be 1,400

I plan to mostly just word process, listen to email and surf the web. But you never know about the future, and what I might want to do. I'm torn whether the processor upgrade (which seems like the only real difference to me) is worth 200. Are there any other differences between the ibook and the powerbook? Thanks.

For your uses, you don't need the powerbook. Spend the extra $200 on more RAM or some cool software.

The only two differences i could find aside from the processor speed:

    Powerbook:
    Mini-DVI out
    64 mb video card

    iBook:
    VGA out
    32 mb video card

I think i would get the powerbook simply because of the processor speed difference, and the better looks.

    powerbook.
the dvi out lets you hook to a external dvi monitor or with an adapter a VGA. also the power book can have an extended desktop while the ibook can only mirror. you can hack the ibook to extend the desktop but it does not run as smoothly as as the PB will.
and the 300mhz do make a difference. the is a marked difference during file transfer and general use.

plus when/if you decide to get into graphics or games you will certainly appreciate the pb. I think it is worth it though.

yes, the pbook is worth the cost... If for nothing else, the case feels MUCH stronger and better able to handle being used as a notebook.

If you're a student, you should look into an Apple ADC student membership. Regular student membership only saves you about 100 bucks on the 12 inch powerbook, but the adc membership is only 99, and saves you 300. I got it before tiger came out and they ended up sending me that for free too. So who knows, if they come out with an update in the next year, you'll get it for free and maybe save even more money.

For a difference of $200, the PowerBook gives you a faster processor & system bus, internal Bluetooth (a $50 option on the iBook), DVI output, twice as much video memory, and more RAM capacity. if money is the issue, the iBook may be a better deal but if you want the best performance buy the PowerBook.

I'd get the powerbook, just for the added video memory alone.

yes, the i books just feel cheap. when i was the the store before i got my powerbook i really didnt notice a differnece, but now that i have my 15 inch PB, when i look at an ibook i wonder why anyone wouldnt spend the extra $200.

im probably just being a snob about it though.
