I'd go check it out. Take a friend, leave all important stuff (cash, computer, camera) in the car until you need it.. I could be stolen - but if it still works - ok.

Call a friend :dunno: If it can't be avoided, meet in a high traffic area - a mall food court, etc.

Employee there? He can't be looking for trouble if he's a government worker. Agree to meet him inside the library - not outside. So its the just lens - no lens caps, box, manual, pouch, hood? If so, its most likely stolen. Gotta factor in the price of what those would be worth. The guy from borrowlenses.com is selling their boxes, he'd probably have a manual lying around too.

I've found good deals local. Like the time I bought a macbook for $375. The guy got it in a "trade" and didn't know the password - quick reformat fixed that. Instant $400 profit.

Buying used camera gear (at least items that are in hot demand) is kind of like putting money in the bank. I can always resell it later for nearly what I paid.

No, I sold it on Craigslist the first day I listed it. The only reason I sold it was because I found a 16-35 f/2.8 L lens and decided that I needed the extra stop of light. The 16-35 set me back nearly a grand though.
