Iraqi soldiers hold their new rifles, provided by U.S. forces, in Taji U.S. military camp near Baghdad, Sunday, May 13, 2007.

Good I hope we givem more AR's so the x39 prices come down, I dont give a fuck if 5.56 prices double.

The only ammo that will go up is 62 grain penetrator and 55 grain FMJ that meets military specs. One of the benifits of the 5.56 round is, more than just one company makes it, and many varieties exist. If you want 7.62x39 that is price-competitive, you get Wolf or Barnul, and both of them have military contracts if I remember correctly. The brass cased x39 rounds are all more expensive than 5.56.

I'm not worried and 5.56/.223, I'm more worried that the Monarch (Barnul) steel cased they sell at Acedemy will get too expensive to shoot my SKS all the time.

    wrong.

They are going to need contractors to fill the orders for ammo contracts, those orders will be bid on, and full filled by major ammo manufacturers around the world. While they are making ammo to full fill these contracts, they won't be making regular batches of ammo, meaning the supply will go down, and demand will stay the same (if it doesn't go up from everyone panicing and stocking up) and there for the prices will go up, not just on any one caliber, but more than likely across the board.

I doubt it. The US military has plenty of places to get 5.56. There is enough excess produced that it is availible at gun shows and online currently, I doubt they will really have to take on any more manufacturing facilities.

The military doesn't sell surplus ammo, IIRC, nor any other surplus products to civilians. I believe this was the doing of Bill Clinton?

Besides that, you think there is really a surplus of 5.56 over there? :mamoru:

If there is enough around that it is being made availible for civilians, there is obviously some excess somewhere. My friend bought 1000 rounds of penetrator ammo a month or so back, I know the stuff is out there.

Probably British shit, or old 80's US .mil stuff.

Hopefully someone can come in here and clear up that US doesn't sell surplus gear anymore to civilians.

Current production US surp ammo you see is pretty much all either overrun that the gov didnt buy, or rejects the gov didn't buy. Doubt there will be to much overrun stuff anytime soon.
