US troops in Iraq get to drink beer for Super Bowl

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090109/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_iraq_super_bowl

BAGHDAD – American troops in Iraq will be allowed to drink beer without fear of court-martial for this year's Super Bowl — an exception to a strict military ban on drinking alcohol in combat zones.
In what is sure to be a major morale boost, the top U.S. commander in Iraq Gen. Raymond Odierno issued a waiver Wednesday paving the way for troops to participate in the popular American football tradition.
Super Bowl XLIII will kick off on Feb. 1 in Tampa, Florida, but it will be 2 a.m. in Baghdad when the live broadcast starts in Iraq. Troops will gather in dining halls on military bases nationwide to watch the game.
A copy of the waiver said the consumption of alcoholic beverages will be limited to Feb. 1-2 and service members can only have two, 12-ounce beers each.
Odierno also appeared to acknowledge the sensitivity of drinking alcohol in an Islamic country, particularly considering the game falls during a holy period for Iraq's majority Shiite Muslims.
The waiver orders commanders to "keep in mind all host nation laws and customs regarding alcohol consumption" and "to exercise discretion and good judgment in enforcing these guidelines and restrictions."

Shit.... don't they have pools in the green zone? Just being there would be a huge moral booster.

We have beer days in the Navy, if you're underway for something like 45 days straight without hitting port you're allowed 2x 12oz beers. We were like 2 days from getting our second beer day on one stint a few years back.

People that didn't drink were selling theirs for like $10-20/beer.

I'm in Baghdad but seeing how I spend 99% of my time at this JSS, I do not see that happening for me and my guys. In 04 it was much easier to aquire umm 'beverages' but then some guys ( as expected) went waaaay over board.

Doesn't surprise me for those fuckers in the GZ.

I did get 2 beers while in Ramadi during one of my deployments though which was cool.

Wow, thats one thing I never knew as a civilian.

Didn't think they could/would limit drinking especially to the soldiers overseas (thanks again). Figured that'd be the least of their worries. It's obvious why they don't allow it, but im glad somethings being done for at least a day or two!

My SNCO took a beer brewing kit during my first deployment to Al Asad back in 04. Of course we had other beverages too. Comsec safes are FTW. Second time I was based out of Qatar, loved the drinks there.
