    Is it common for a married couple, while in theater, to both go on emergency leave when there is an emergency involving a family member of one of them?

    I've never heard of a military couple going on emergency leave together, but I don't suppose it's out of the question. Although I think only the one that is blood-related to the family member will get the emergency leave.

    caveat: I'm not a military lawyer, don't know anyone that is, and did not stay in a Holiday Inn last night.

    Yeah, emergency leave is usually only granted for a blood relative or if that family member raised them, hard to imagine that being the case with two people that are married. Although, it can happen (command decision).

    A woman I know was just shot last night in a hold up, and her husband deployed just two days ago. What the hell can he do in that situation?

    His/her family needs to contact their local Red Cross chapter. They need to tell them that his spouse is in the hospital with a gunshot wound and her status (critical/guarded/etc). They will need to provide as much of the following as possible (in order of priority):
    * Full name
    * Rank/rating
    * Branch of service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard)
    * Social Security Account number or date of birth
    * Military address
    * Information about the deployed unit and home base unit
